About me

Bikram Bhattarai
Bikram Bhattarai Data Analyst · MDS @ Swinburne · Melbourne

I'm a data analyst with nearly four years of offshore experience across market and product insights, reporting, and product analytics, currently completing a Master of Data Science at Swinburne University in Melbourne. My background sits at the intersection of business strategy and data - an MBA in Marketing & Business Analytics on the commercial side, with day-to-day work in SQL, Python, R, and Tableau on the technical side.

I work primarily in SQL, Python, R, Tableau, and Power BI, with experience in Google Analytics 4 and Excel for marketing-side analysis. I care about clean assumptions, reproducible work, and writing the README.

My journey into data

My route into analytics started in product operations. I spent two years at PowerWeave in Mumbai managing catalogue data and order workflows for a US wholesale platform - large datasets, recurring process gaps, and the kind of detail work that teaches you to respect a clean spreadsheet. From there I moved to Bangalore, joined Keygap Software Solutions as a Junior Customer Insights Analyst, and started working on SaaS product and marketing data full-time: SQL pulls, Tableau dashboards, A/B test reporting, NPS analysis, KPI rollups for the team lead.

That work made one thing obvious: I enjoyed the data side more than the campaign side. The questions that mattered - which segment is actually growing? which signup cohort retains? what does this dashboard not tell us? - were data questions. So I moved to Melbourne, started a Master of Data Science at Swinburne, and I'm now building the technical foundation I'd been working around. The career change isn't really a pivot - it's the part of my last job finally getting its own title.

"I don't want to just produce reports. I want the report to change what the team does on Monday."

Domain-adaptive sentiment analysis using Transformers

Cross-domain NLP system combining Reddit emotion data with financial sentiment

Ongoing team project at Swinburne. Led the data preparation pipeline combining GoEmotions (58k Reddit comments) with Financial PhraseBank (4,845 financial sentences); designed a 6-class pseudo-labelling schema to harmonise incompatible label sets across the two corpora. Conducted ETL and EDA - surfacing a 9:1 class imbalance and 39.9% cross-domain vocabulary overlap - and contributed individual research on transfer learning and domain adaptation covering BERT, FinBERT, and DAPT strategies.

Electric vehicle population analysis

Profiled EV uptake across Washington State by model year, make, county, and electric range

Analysed a Washington State EV population dataset covering BEV and PHEV registrations. Cleaned and explored the data in Python (pandas, matplotlib, seaborn) - identifying top manufacturers, geographic concentration, and year-on-year growth in battery EV adoption. Built an interactive Tableau dashboard for a non-technical policy audience covering county-level distribution, electric range comparisons across brands, and CAFV eligibility breakdown.

Tableau · HR analytics

Interactive HR analytics dashboard

Surfaced workforce demographics and attrition patterns for HR decision-making

A Tableau dashboard analysing employee data - headcount, attrition rate, demographics, and department breakdowns - with interactive filters that let HR drill into specific groups. Designed to answer the questions HR teams typically ask first: who's leaving, where, and why.

Bank loan portfolio dashboard

Tracked loan volume, repayment health, and risk concentrations across the portfolio

Imported and structured a bank loan dataset in MS SQL Server, writing queries to compute KPIs - total applications, funded amounts, average interest rates, and MoM trends - using DATEPART, CTEs, and window functions. Classified loans into good/bad categories and built three interactive Tableau dashboards (Summary, Overview, Details) covering monthly trends, regional analysis via filled maps, and loan-purpose breakdowns. All figures cross-validated against SQL query results.

Polish companies bankruptcy prediction

Predicting corporate insolvency from financial ratios under severe class imbalance

Ongoing project using the UCI Polish Companies Bankruptcy dataset - five yearly snapshots, 64 financial ratio features. Building a predictive model to flag firms at insolvency risk, handling severe class imbalance with SMOTE and cost-sensitive learning. Comparing logistic regression, random forest, and gradient boosting on recall and ROC-AUC given the high cost of false negatives in financial risk contexts. Feature importance analysis across liquidity, profitability, and leverage ratios.

Dynamic sales dashboard

Year-over-year sales tracking with category and regional drill-downs

A Tableau sales dashboard showing total sales, profit, and quantity trends across years, with breakdowns by category, sub-category, and region. Built to demonstrate the BI fundamentals - clean KPIs at the top, supporting visuals below, interactive filters throughout.
